Goldilocks and the Three Bears

At Avonmore Primary School all the teachers and pupils are busy learning lines and making props for the Christmas production. Since the scripts went out it was just memorising, memorising and even more memorising. All of the school is nervous about the play because they’re not sure what will happen. The dress rehearsal is next week so it’s a rush to bring in costumes and make props such as: a tea cup, a television and changing scene signs. I have two parts: one part, I walk around holding a sign with a few fellow classmates: for my other part, I play Jack from Jack and Jill. No one wants to slip up on the night in front of parents and classmates. The play is hilarious with many dramas. All the parents want to see their children on the stage doing their best. I think the parts were chosen well after the auditions and the main characters are trying their best to put movement into their acting and are learning their lines well. But we had such little notice for the play and we have the least time to prepare as now changes are still being made and there’s a Christmas party so people have to bring in fizzy drinks, savoury party foods, and sweet party food so this year 6 has to learn their lines at home. There’s only about 1, 2 or 3 rehearsals left so all the children have to practise at home as well as school!

YEAR 5’S TRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSUEM

On 18th of October year 5 went to the Science Museum to learn about space because it was our main topic. One big reason we wanted to go there is because we wanted to know how astronauts used the toilet up there with everything floating. We went there by train and nothing unusual happened, it took us about 25 minutes.
When we got there we were amazed to see all the things that the astronauts used, from there we walked to the cinema IMAX, we watched ‘fly me to the moon’ in 3D and whenever the flies came near us we tried to swat them which was very fun. Everybody thought the movie was brilliant, after the movie everyone was hungry and we thought it was lunch-time. But we had to listen to someone talk about space.
The person talked to us about space food, the first spacecraft to go to the moon and about the space toilets and she said ‘The astronauts had to wear space nappies and they could go to the toilet whenever they wanted but wearing the nappies was very uncomfortable. The woman talked to us about all these things and it lasted around half an hour.
It was finally lunch-time. We all walked to get our packed-lunches. From there we walked to the dining room and started gobbling up our food.
After that we got in our groups and explored the room about space for about 15 minutes.

Heroes and Heroines Day

On Friday the 21st of October all the children and teachers came in as their hero or heroine because it was national heroes’ day. The purpose of this day was to remember and support all the people who have done amazing things in their lives. Everybody in the school enjoyed the day and most of them brought in amazing costumes. There was a huge parade in the hall of all the costumes (teachers as well as children!). Everybody came out of the hall with smiles on their faces.
It wasn’t all fun and games; we had to do homework on our hero which included why they’re our hero. People came in as superheroes, suffragettes, Olympic athletes, famous people from the past, and people from films and soldiers.

A New Beginning

It has been 3 weeks since the new the new term began and we all have settled in our new classes. This is what the children said about classes:
Year 6
It’s good and at a higher level which is good and it’s a better level for everyone. Miss Mathews is quiet funny and makes the learning easier.

Year 5
Year 5 is good and has lots of fun things and activities to do so you don’t get bored. The teacher Miss Driscoll, is strict but very fair and helpful.

Year 4
It’s fun and the work is easy. Miss Cole is nice. We like her and she gives us easy work.

Year 3
I think it is kind of good and I think I will learn well .Our teacher (Mrs LeSage) is not strict and I like our teacher.

The Plants

I conducted an interview with Ms Clement, asking her about the garden and the changes it is going through in early Autumn.
Q: What is going to happen to the ladybirds in the autumn?
A: We didn’t have many lady birds this year.
Q: Have you ever seen a spider in the spider frame?
A: Some children have.
Q: Will there be less or more spiders in the autumn?
A: In September and October you should see more spiders and spider webs because the weather is getting colder.
Q: The sunflowers look like they’re going to die. What is going to happen to the stalk? What is going to happen to the sunflowers that didn’t grow yet?
A: Sometimes we save them to use as canes to support other plants. The sunflower seeds will be eaten by birds and squirrels and some will be planted next year.
Q: How do you feel about the pumpkins?
A: We are disappointed because none grew this year even though we put manure on the soil last autumn to fertilise the soil to help them to grow. Maybe the weather in the summer wasn’t very good.
Q: What about the lettuce and the corn. What is going to happen to them?
A: Some lettuce was eaten by the children at lunch time. The sweet corn will hopefully be shown at harvest assembly (unless the squirrels eat them first!).

Our New Playground

Here at Avonmore in key stage 2, we have recently installed a new playground structure and things like a trampoline, monkey bars and new basket ball hoops. I have managed to get some pupils’ opinions on the new equipment. Here they are:
A pupil in Year 6 said, “I like all the new stuff but I like the trampoline the best.” Another girl in Year 5 said, “I LOVE the monkey bars best because there is not usually a big queue.”
So, in conclusion nearly everyone in the key Stage 2 seems to be proud of our new playground. It’s going to take some getting used to but the best thing is nobody’s going to get bored of it in a hurry!

Head dissapointed by incomplete playground!!!!!!!!!!!

On the 21st September, I interviewed Mr. Hale, our head teacher, about the new playground.
Q: Are you disappointed that the playground didn't get finish on time?
A: I am very disappointed but pleased that it's finished now.
Q: How long do you think it will take to finish?
A: It was supposed to finish on the 30thof August.
Q: How much money did you use for the whole playground change?
A: £60,000.
Q: How many times has the school playground been changed since you started here?
A: For the last 16 years probably 5 or 6 times but the change that just happened now is the biggest that has happened.
Q: Do you think the newest built playground is better than any playgrounds built for our school?A: Yes, I think it's a great improvement and I am glad that the top playground children have something to climb on.
Q: When was the last time you changed the playground?
A: The last change was building the brick wall in 2005.
Q: Do you think it would be better if you used the money for something else other than the playground?
A: No, I think it was the best thing to spend the money on at this time.
Q: If you had the money (which you probably have) would you change the playground every year?
A: No, because it costs a lot of money to make changes every year, though we might make small changes but not big ones.

Yr 6's Rights and Responsibilities

The yr 6s are proud to have so many responsibilities such as being wet play monitors, recycling and many more. Not everyone was lucky enough to be able to pick their own jobs because they were absent. I’m very proud because I’m trusted with a job. Yr 6s are happy because they know that the teachers trust them and the whole school trusts them as well.
There is only one more job left-office prefects (when 4 students cover the office when the staff are having their lunch).
Shall I apply to be an office prefect?

Goodbye

During our time in Avonmore we have enjoyed the physical education and sport facilities. We have also enjoyed the clubs such as football club and sports club. We had a lot of fun at the year 6 leavers’ party and we have had Miss Mathews for two years and really enjoyed our time with her. Being on the blog was a very fun and challenging time but myself and the other bloggers had really enjoyed it.This is our last post and from us we say goodbye.
PS: We couldn’t have done it without DJ Cotten, Miss Mathews, Miss O’sullivan and last but not least Mr Hale.

The Last Two Days

This is Yr 6’s last week in Avonmore Primary School which means this is the last blog update from us Year 6 pupils 2011. Because we haven’t been updating recently we are going to put lots of recent events all together in one post . We have two lovely days of parties and we also have a disco. We couldn’t have done this without Dj Cotten and the rest of the teachers. We have one more play that we are doing tonight which is Midsummer Night’s Dream. We are all very excited and very upset that we are probably not going to see each other again. We also had a school talent contest and the group Mask from year 5 won the contest. We are really going to miss Avonmore. Thank you! Hope you enjoyed J
P.S. bye bye Avonmore. We will miss you! From Kai and Tate Y6

We have a school route on Mondays year 6 get to play, on Tuesday year 5 get to play, on Wednesday year 4 get to play, on Thursday and on Friday all of us get to play. We have a lot of fun but I guess we need a lot of practice. We are in charge of taking it out putting it back inand taking care of the equipment.

Thursday 12 May 2011

On the 1st of March year 6 went to the Bank of England. We went to a workshop about money. There were four clips which were about 4 minutes long. We had to be security checked in the beginning then we went to the workshop. After the workshop we went to the museum. There was a bar of gold and loads of experiments about money and how it’s organised. After we went St Pauls Cathedral to eat lunch. There, the buildings were really big. Then’ we took the train back to West Kensington and we walked all the way to school. We arrived at 3:00pm.That was our day at the Bank of England!

Swimming Gala

On the 1st of March, a few children from year 6 and a few children from year 5 went to Fulham Pools to attend a swimming gala. We all had a go at racing and it was great fun!!! Firstly, we had a free style 50m race. Secondly, we had a 25 metre breast stroke. Then, there was a 25 metre back stroke. Finally, we had a relay race and then it was the end. Some children went back to Fulham Pools on Friday and one of our pupils came first place in the 50 metre backstroke! Even though some of us lost, it was the taking part that mattered.

Maths/puzzle workshop

Yesterday all the classes went into the hall to participate in a puzzle workshop at different times. Yr 6 and yr 5 went last and we had a lot of fun. We were split up into 10 groups. The puzzles were very hard because the leader of the workshop, Muffy, said you had to think outside the box. The first game was an iceberg which wobbled and you had to put as many penguins on it without them falling off. The second game was a puzzle map of a road and we all had 20 pieces. There was not to be any dead ends and roads leading off anywhere. The most challenging part of this puzzle, however, was that all pieces fit into each other on every side! The third puzzle were tubes and again you couldn’t make any dead ends. The fourth puzzle was a castle and you had a picture and 5 blocks with 3 umbrellas and you had to try and make it. The second last game was a hexagon shape and you had coloured shapes and the same colour couldn’t touch each other. The last game was a pattern puzzle and hardly any groups finished it, except mine. We had a great and puzzling time!

Rabbits on the loose

On Monday the 28th of February, two year 6 students found two rabbits mysteriously wandering around the year 4 garden. No one knows how they ended up in the garden but all we know is that they were there. The first rabbit was white with brown spots and the second one was fully white. But mysteriously disappeared one night and were never to be found again...

Fun Apparatus!

In year 6 we have been using the apparatus in P.E . The week before half term was our last week using them and it was very fun!! First, we had to set up the apparatus. We used the box, the frame, the ropes and we also used benches, horses and mats to create a new activity. A few of us were able to climb all the way up the rope and some of us were able to jump all the way over the horse with the spring board. A lot of us tried to see if we could balance on the thin side of the bench and turn around. We put a metal bar across one side of the frame to the other side of the frame. A lot of us could do flips around the metal bar. We all enjoyed the apparatus A LOT!!

Year 4 visits the National Gallery!

On Wednesday, Year 4 went to the National Gallery. Year 4 were all stimulated to go. They took a train from Hammersmith station to get the line which is the Piccadilly line. It was to Leicester Square. Year 4 where all raring to go inside! When they arrived, the teacher took our jackets and we sat for lunch. After lunch we met a girl called Rachel who was our guide. She showed us famous pictures, painted by Peter Paul Rumbus and Vincent Van Gogh. Everybody’s favourite picture was Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. After that, we took the train home. THAT WAS OUR DAY AT NATIONAL GALLERY!

Houses of Parliament

On the 1st February ,2011, year 6 went to the Houses of Parliament. We took the bus from Olympia station to Trafalgar Square. It was an adventure to remember. We saw Harrods, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and we went through Piccadilly Circus. When we got off the bus we had to walk to the Houses of Parliament. We passed the horse guards and Downing Street. Finally, we had arrived at the Houses of Parliament. Everybody had to go through security. After that, we split up in groups and explored. Our tour guide, Will, took us down this big tunnel and we ended up in the Houses of Commons. It was all green. Nobody was allowed to sit on the chairs. After that we went to the House of Lords. Everybody gasped as it was so luxurious. Again, we weren’t allowed to sit on the chairs. The Queens chair was plated with gold. Did you know that a long time ago Micheal Jackson wanted to buy the Queens chair but they said no. when he went back to America they made him a thrown. After that we had a workshop everybody loved it and finally it was time to go. THAT WAS OUR TIME AT THE HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT!! We had lots of fun.

Goodbye Primary School !!!!!

I have been visiting secondary schools in Hammersmith and Fulham because I have been preparing to leave primary school and go out to big school. My first choice for a secondary school is Hammersmith Academy. It is a brand new school and has a brand new building. It will open this year when year 6’s move on to secondary school. I went for a test for the school. Before the test I was nervous but there was nothing to worry about. The test was easy. It was a non-verbal reasoning test. Before the test at home I was using practise non-verbal reasoning tests. I can’t wait until the 1st of March because that is when I will find out if I got in. I also applied for Chiswick Community school but it has no test. Chiswick has a waiting list but I think I have a big chance of getting in because my brother is there. The last school I applied for was West London Free school. It is also a brand new school but it has no test.

Choosing Secondary Schools

Year 6 students have began thinking about their futures and what schools they will be attending in September. When I went to the new secondary schools I was so scared but I soon got used to being there. I have applied for Chiswick and Holland Park. I really want to go to Holland Park because it has big rooms and a great art room. They are changing the whole building and they gave us all pictures of the new building. I did the art aptitude and we had to draw a picture of the Weeping Woman from Pablo Picasso. I didn’t prefer Chiswick as much because it had small classes and a separate playground for the new year 7’s which I don’t really like but otherwise it is great. At Holland park, we had to study non verbal reasoning and verbal reasoning which is easy to me. At Chiswick, there is a waiting list but I think I will get in easily because my brother is there.

Office Work

Every day from 12:30 to 13:30 children from year 6 look after the office whilst all the teachers have lunch. We answer calls, open doors for only staff at Avonmore and our own parents. While we are office prefects we can do homework, chat to our partners, draw , make things out of paper or make up games to play. We love doing this job and we love being responsible!

Shakespeare's play

Last week we watched a play called Shakespearience and it was really good! The first act was Romeo and Juliet, then it was The Merchant of Venice, and lastly, it was Macbeth. There was also a band called the Percelts who were very musically talented! My favourite part was the Merchant of Venice because my favourite line was when Shylock said, “I want a pound of your flesh nearest the heart.” But the lawyer replied, “You should not shred a drop of blood,” which is impossible. They were really good at acting and they had great costumes. The performance was brilliant: we learned so much!

Wasted!!!!

On the 20th of January there was a group called Wasted who came to visit our school. They told us about how people can give you drugs even if they don’t look like they do. Another year six class from Sacred Heart Primay came to watch, too. They peformed a play about how you should never take drugs even if your friends do it. They chose two different people to be one of the characters and to try to change the situation which was very funny because the chosen students were laughing a lot of the time. The peformance was brilliant!! And, it was educational!
KS2 Carol Concert
On Wednesday 5th December, there was the KS2 concert. Year 6 had been preparing for the concert all week. They had been singing in the hall, classroom and in front of an audience. The students had to arrive at 17:35 to change into their outfits. We were all dressed as Christmas carolers. Everybody was excited. We walked into the hall and all the parents were looking at us which made me feel nervous. The time came for us to sing. There was a band of people playing lots of instruments. We nailed the concert. The concert was a success!

Santa came to Avonmore!

Before the Christmas break, the KS1 students had a very special guest from the North Pole! It was Santa Claus! He arrived in a red suit and carried a sack full of presents. Each of the students happily received a present! Even the staff were happy to see hi m. However, the staff didn’t receive any presents unfortunately!

Our little Mozarts

In year 6, our music teacher chose 15 year 6 students to participate in recorder lessons. We play Yamaha recorders which cost five pounds each to purchase. Starting last term, Thursday mornings at 9:00 to 9:30 in the school hall, we learn new notes each lesson and then play a new piece of music. We have been going for a few weeks from now. I have learned a great deal about recorder music and am looking forward to the remainder of the sessions!
