Holi
During this week the festival of Holi was celebrated by
millions of Indian people. This celebration includes spraying colour at each
other, praying and seeing friends for parties. Unfortunately, the bad weather
in England stopped some of the celebrations happening because the weather was
too cold. However, I was still able to enjoy seeing pictures of my friends’ and
family’s celebrations in India!
Avonmore’s Eggcellent Egghibition!
To bring round
the cheerful Easter spirit, students at Avonmore have been taking part in
decorating eggs in the most creative ways possible to make a colourful display
in the hall. Our pretty EGGhibition really brightens up the stage eggs in an
EGGtraordinary way. That’s EGGsactly what we need!
Year 6’s trip to the Bank of England
On Thursday 14th March year 6 went to the Bank of
England. We went on the Tube and got off at Monument and walked for a few
minutes. Finally we got to the Bank of England. The doors were huge and they
were really heavy for security reasons. When we went in there was a museum and
it was enormous. After we went to a room
that was like a cinema. We met a man called Richard. He talked about what money
is and how we use it. We watched a few
clips about how we use money and then Richard asked us a few questions. When
that finished we went into the museum and I actually touched real gold!!!! After
we had a booklet full of questions and when we answered them. We came back to school with only the items in
our pockets that we had left with and no extra coins! This trip was so
fun!!!!!!
Scouts go to Gala
Last Saturday, some students in year 5 went to a swimming gala.
There were two other children who also attended. We won the swimming gala by 25 points! We swam
at Harrow, Porchester pools. We are known as 48th Kensington. The
other groups that went are 20th Fulham and 9th Chelsea.
One of Avonmore’s students came 1st in Front Crawl qualifiers and the
final. Also, someone came 3rd in breaststroke in the qualifiers and
5th in the finals. As well, another student came 2nd in breaststroke
in the qualifiers as well in the finals. They came 3rd in Front Craw
in the qualifiers. We are undefeated for 6 years.
Avonmore Art
In Avonmore we have a new art history timeline display stretching from ancient Egyptian art to the present day! Here is a list of some of the periods it covers: Egyptian 320-332BC, Greeks 500BC, Aztec 1300-1519AD, Renaissance 1300-1600AD, Neo-Classicism 1750-18760AD, Romanticism 1800’s, Pop art 1960’s and Contemporary art-present day. There is also many many more. In year 6 we have been looking at Andy Warhol’s work: his most famous piece of work is Marilyn Monroe in silk screen. What styles do you like the most? What is the name of your favourite artist?

Special Delivery from Buckingham Palace
We
interviewed a boy who received a letter from the Queen and we asked him some
questions. We asked why he received the letter. He responded that because he
had sent a letter last year expressing his pride in attending this school
because of such well-behaved children Buckingham Palace had responded. They
said thank you for the letter and appreciated hearing about our fabulous
school. Next, we asked him how he felt,
and he was feeling like a famous person! The person who sent him the letter was
the Queen’s Lady-in Waiting, Susan Huffy. Therefore, we are very lucky because
the Queen receives so many letters and she was generous enough to actually send
a reply.

The Artistic Way For Year 5
On Friday 8th
February 2013 Year 5 visited the William Morris Society. William Morris was an
English textile designer in the 19th century. First, we went to the downstairs
area in the house because people were living upstairs (like William Morris
was). So, first we had to spilt up into 2 groups- one was doing the stained
glass paintings and the other was doing silk paintings. I did silk paintings
first. There are positives and negatives about silk paintings. Let’s start with
the positives. The positives are that you get to use stencils to paint and/or
draw, and the negatives are that you cannot rub the pencils out. I think we did
a good job of making silk paintings. Before we did the stained glass windows we
had a chocolate cookie. Some people were absolutely crazy for the cookies!
After we ate the cookie we made stained glass windows. We had to follow the
outline of it so we could draw it like William Morris. We made our favourite
letter (or initials) on a transparent plastic paper and the outline was
underneath. Most people did the first letter of their name. After we made the
outline with rub-able pen we decorated it and the last thing we did was have
lunch. Then we returned to school.
Transition
I interviewed three people on their
thoughts about secondary school and I asked them a few questions such as: what
will you miss the most about Avonmore? Their answers were all quite similar:
they all said that they would miss their friends. Others said that they would
miss the calmness of our school, and all the fun activities. Another question I
asked was: list three words to explain your experience at Avonmore? They said
memorable, educational and enjoyable.
