YEAR 5’S TRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSUEM

On 18th of October year 5 went to the Science Museum to learn about space because it was our main topic. One big reason we wanted to go there is because we wanted to know how astronauts used the toilet up there with everything floating. We went there by train and nothing unusual happened, it took us about 25 minutes.
When we got there we were amazed to see all the things that the astronauts used, from there we walked to the cinema IMAX, we watched ‘fly me to the moon’ in 3D and whenever the flies came near us we tried to swat them which was very fun. Everybody thought the movie was brilliant, after the movie everyone was hungry and we thought it was lunch-time. But we had to listen to someone talk about space.
The person talked to us about space food, the first spacecraft to go to the moon and about the space toilets and she said ‘The astronauts had to wear space nappies and they could go to the toilet whenever they wanted but wearing the nappies was very uncomfortable. The woman talked to us about all these things and it lasted around half an hour.
It was finally lunch-time. We all walked to get our packed-lunches. From there we walked to the dining room and started gobbling up our food.
After that we got in our groups and explored the room about space for about 15 minutes.

Heroes and Heroines Day

On Friday the 21st of October all the children and teachers came in as their hero or heroine because it was national heroes’ day. The purpose of this day was to remember and support all the people who have done amazing things in their lives. Everybody in the school enjoyed the day and most of them brought in amazing costumes. There was a huge parade in the hall of all the costumes (teachers as well as children!). Everybody came out of the hall with smiles on their faces.
It wasn’t all fun and games; we had to do homework on our hero which included why they’re our hero. People came in as superheroes, suffragettes, Olympic athletes, famous people from the past, and people from films and soldiers.

A New Beginning

It has been 3 weeks since the new the new term began and we all have settled in our new classes. This is what the children said about classes:
Year 6
It’s good and at a higher level which is good and it’s a better level for everyone. Miss Mathews is quiet funny and makes the learning easier.

Year 5
Year 5 is good and has lots of fun things and activities to do so you don’t get bored. The teacher Miss Driscoll, is strict but very fair and helpful.

Year 4
It’s fun and the work is easy. Miss Cole is nice. We like her and she gives us easy work.

Year 3
I think it is kind of good and I think I will learn well .Our teacher (Mrs LeSage) is not strict and I like our teacher.

The Plants

I conducted an interview with Ms Clement, asking her about the garden and the changes it is going through in early Autumn.
Q: What is going to happen to the ladybirds in the autumn?
A: We didn’t have many lady birds this year.
Q: Have you ever seen a spider in the spider frame?
A: Some children have.
Q: Will there be less or more spiders in the autumn?
A: In September and October you should see more spiders and spider webs because the weather is getting colder.
Q: The sunflowers look like they’re going to die. What is going to happen to the stalk? What is going to happen to the sunflowers that didn’t grow yet?
A: Sometimes we save them to use as canes to support other plants. The sunflower seeds will be eaten by birds and squirrels and some will be planted next year.
Q: How do you feel about the pumpkins?
A: We are disappointed because none grew this year even though we put manure on the soil last autumn to fertilise the soil to help them to grow. Maybe the weather in the summer wasn’t very good.
Q: What about the lettuce and the corn. What is going to happen to them?
A: Some lettuce was eaten by the children at lunch time. The sweet corn will hopefully be shown at harvest assembly (unless the squirrels eat them first!).

Our New Playground

Here at Avonmore in key stage 2, we have recently installed a new playground structure and things like a trampoline, monkey bars and new basket ball hoops. I have managed to get some pupils’ opinions on the new equipment. Here they are:
A pupil in Year 6 said, “I like all the new stuff but I like the trampoline the best.” Another girl in Year 5 said, “I LOVE the monkey bars best because there is not usually a big queue.”
So, in conclusion nearly everyone in the key Stage 2 seems to be proud of our new playground. It’s going to take some getting used to but the best thing is nobody’s going to get bored of it in a hurry!

Head dissapointed by incomplete playground!!!!!!!!!!!

On the 21st September, I interviewed Mr. Hale, our head teacher, about the new playground.
Q: Are you disappointed that the playground didn't get finish on time?
A: I am very disappointed but pleased that it's finished now.
Q: How long do you think it will take to finish?
A: It was supposed to finish on the 30thof August.
Q: How much money did you use for the whole playground change?
A: £60,000.
Q: How many times has the school playground been changed since you started here?
A: For the last 16 years probably 5 or 6 times but the change that just happened now is the biggest that has happened.
Q: Do you think the newest built playground is better than any playgrounds built for our school?A: Yes, I think it's a great improvement and I am glad that the top playground children have something to climb on.
Q: When was the last time you changed the playground?
A: The last change was building the brick wall in 2005.
Q: Do you think it would be better if you used the money for something else other than the playground?
A: No, I think it was the best thing to spend the money on at this time.
Q: If you had the money (which you probably have) would you change the playground every year?
A: No, because it costs a lot of money to make changes every year, though we might make small changes but not big ones.

Yr 6's Rights and Responsibilities

The yr 6s are proud to have so many responsibilities such as being wet play monitors, recycling and many more. Not everyone was lucky enough to be able to pick their own jobs because they were absent. I’m very proud because I’m trusted with a job. Yr 6s are happy because they know that the teachers trust them and the whole school trusts them as well.
There is only one more job left-office prefects (when 4 students cover the office when the staff are having their lunch).
